Cache Community Band

   The Cache Community Band program will include music selections from “The Music Man” and “Paint Your Wagon”, a patriotic tribute to our great nation, a salute to our veterans, and a few surprises!   The Cache Community Band has launched into a new era of musical excellence, from a parade band to a concert band of about 65 players. The band has been an active participant in community and cultural events throughout the area, and continues to enrich lives with exceptional concerts and programs.

Jeff Karren, organist

   Jeff Karren will be demonstrating the pipe organ's vast musical versatility, with an eclectic program that highlights the unique musical colors of Logan's Tabernacle organ.  Selections include not only classic organ works but also contemporary hymn preludes and nontraditional settings of well-known tunes.  A native of Cache Valley, Jeff is thrilled to perform on the instrument that first sparked his interest in pipe organs. Jeff Karren studies with Lynn Thomas, director of organ studies at Utah State University.

Craig Jessop, , “The Best of Beethoven”

   Craig Jessop will focus on the music featured in the upcoming “Best of Beethoven” Concert, including a discussion of the Choral Fantasy, Missa Solemnis and the 9th Symphony.  The concert will be presented on Wednesday evening August 6^th at the Ellen Eccles Theatre in Logan, It  will feature the American Festival Chorus, soloists from the Utah Festival Opera and the Utah Festival Orchestra conducted by Craig Jessop.  

Dr. Jessop is the Dean of the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University, Music Director of the American Festival Chorus, and former director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  He has been on the American choral scene for more than thirty years.  Under Dr. Jessop’s musical direction, the Tabernacle Choir received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Arts.   He has recorded over 15 CDs on the Telarc and MTC labels with the Choir and most recently received a Grammy nomination for his work with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.  In 2013, Dr. Jessop was the recipient of the prestigious Madeleine Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts and Humanities.

Michelle Broadbent, soprano

   Michelle Broadbent is happy to be returning this year to the 2014 Tabernacle Concert Series. Michelle graduated from Utah State and earned a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from BYU-Provo. She won the Concerto Competition at both universities and was BYU’s “Singer of the Year”.  In addition, she was a district winner and regional finalist in the prestigious MET Competition. She has studied and performed in Italy, as well as performing in England, Wales, Ireland, Russia, El Salvador and Guatemala.  Michelle is a gifted performer with a range of gorgeous high notes and rich low notes that lends warmth and beauty to the many genres of music that she sings. Michelle possesses the unique ability to span styles and genres, delivering brilliant interpretations that will touch your hearts and lift your spirits. She is currently a member of the voice faculty at BYU-Idaho.

Harry Heap, organist

   This concert will include works of Bach, Brahms, Jehan Alain, and several variations on familiar hymns.  Dr. Harold Heap has taught at major universities in Illinois, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Utah.  For the past four years he has been a student mentor in Teacher Education at Western Governors University.  He received a Bachelor’s  Degree with Honors in Music from the University of Iowa, a  Masters Degree in Conducting from Eastern Illinois University, and a Doctorate in Choral Literature and Conducting from the University of Illinois.  Dr. Heap conducts the annual Food Bank Benefit Christmas Concerts at the Tabernacle, is a vocal soloist, and sings with the American Festival Chorus.  He lives in Logan with his wife, Janice, and two daughters, Ella and Emily whom he accompanied at the Tabernacle for her July 8th concert.

The 4 Hims - Barbershop Quartet

   “The 4 Hims” have performed in a wide variety of venues.  Their blend of barbershop, a cappella bluegrass, and instrumental music, combined with a zany sense of humor, makes for unique and delightful entertainment and has been dubbed "fantastic" and "hilarious”.  The four Edwards brothers are based in Davis County.   For more information about this award-winning vocal quartet, go to www.4hims.com.

   David Edwards, Bass, is accomplished in voice, cello, guitar, and tuba. David is a computer software engineer and has worked in several States and Japan. He is an expert on kanji – character-based Japanese writing.  David is the father of four.  He easily gets absorbed in “projects” and writes novels in his spare time.

  Alan Edwards, Lead, played jazz saxophone in California, has written more than 2,000 newspaper articles on everything from government scandals to operatic vibrato, and is an award-winning journalist.  He practiced patent law, logged trees, researched space science, and programmed computers. He lives with his wife, three daughters, and a dog.

   Farrell Edwards, Baritone, is a trombone artiste and the brains behind the development of numerous Electronic Arts computer games. He is a connoisseur of fine automobiles, and loves to water ski and work in his garden.  He has rubbed shoulders with isolated Indonesian natives and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. Farrell is the proud father of four children.

   John Edwards, Tenor, is also the group’s trumpet player, the mouth drummer, and primary pianist.  He is a research scientist at the University of Utah.  He toured with the world-champion Blue Devils drum and bugle corps, and played soccer in Chile.  John is the father of six children; he raises chickens in his spare time.

Major Family Ranch Hand Band

   The  Major Family Ranch Hands  Band will be riding into Logan on July 24^th to share  original  songs of contemporary rural life, and  traditional songs of the West. The Majors  reside in Avon  (between Paradise and Eden),  where they raise  horses, hay,  show steers, other miscellaneous critters, and children (not necessarily in that order!)  Their original compositions chronicle a rural lifestyle that includes livestock, chores, children, and neighbors, often with a humorous twist.   Traditional numbers reflect the values and traditions that have made the ‘West’ a great place to live. The band’s current lineup includes Chet (cajon), Jake (bass, vocals), Dawna (vocals) and Dale (guitar and vocals).  Come out and ride the range with the Ranch Hands Band on Pioneer day.

Little Bloomsbury Chinese program 
“The Silk Road”,

costume, is also an award-winning ice skater and pianist.  

The theme of this year's Little Bloomsbury Chinese Presentation is The Silk Road, one of the world's oldest trade routes that played an important role in the exchange of culture, beliefs, technology, and inventions from Western China across Central Asia and the West.  Through poetry reading, kung fu sign language performance, Chinese dance, and an intro to the stark practical and philosophical contrasts between Chinese and Western Medicine, Chinese and Western pop music, we offer a glimpse of the evolving diverse global civilization from ancient to modern times, from the Middle Kingdom to Cache Valley.  Little Bloomsbury Foundation’s mission is to “Promote Peace and Hope in an Uncertain World” through free and family-friendly programs in the arts and Humanities. The Foundation hosts a weekly Chinese Culture and Language Workshop in the summer and an Annual Little Bloomsbury Art and Music Festival at the last weekend of April; also organizes the County Fair Art Show at the Logan Fairgrounds August 7-9, and is the Development Sponsor of “Wan Li Lu Ten Thousand Miles,” a trilingual radio program in English, Chinese, and Spanish to be launched from Cache Valley.

Bradley Ottesen, Mayumi Matsen, Liesel Fedkenheuer 

     (violist, pianist, & vocalist)

Bradley Ottesen will be joined by pianist Mayumi Matzen and mezzo-soprano Liesel Fedkenheuer to present a program of chamber music by British composers: Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Bridge, and Rebecca Clarke.  Ottesen is the violist of the internationally acclaimed Fry Street quartet and currently teaches on the string and chamber music faculty at Utah State University.  He holds degrees from Northwestern University and the New England Conservatory.  Prior to arriving in Utah, he served four seasons as Assistant Principal Violist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Alberta, Canada.  Bradley performs on a viola made for him by Hiroshi Iizuka of Philadelphia and a bow by Pierre Simon of 1865.  Bradley resides in Logan with his wife Denise who is an audio-visual system design consultant. 

Dr. Mayumi Matzen currently teaches individual piano lessons at Utah State University, and also maintains a career as an international recitalist and soloist, including a recent collaboration with James Thompson, professor of trumpet at Eastman School of Music. She received a Bachelors degree in piano performance from Kyoto City University of Arts, and both a Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. 

Liesel Fedkenheuer teaches vocal students at Utah State University. Upon completion of degrees in vocal performance and opera from the University of Toronto, she became a member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble.  She has sung with Opera Companies across North America and as a recitalist with the Marilyn Horne Foundation after winning the foundation’s prestigious competition.

 Sue Baker, Soprano

   Susan Baker will delight you with songs from the Broadway stage and familiar arias from beloved operas, including "La Boheme", "Gianni Schicchi" and "Tales of Hoffmann". She performed professionally, both in Southern California and internationally before moving to Cache Valley with her husband and family. She studied vocal performance at USU and Cal State from which she graduated.  Susan has enjoyed singing the National Anthem for the Dodgers and Clippers for many seasons in Los Angeles and now, for the Aggies. She is grateful for her talented accompanists, Jennifer Bohman and Diane Jensen. Jennifer is a graduate of USU in vocal performance, teaches piano and voice and is a musical director for both Sky View High theater productions and Four Seasons Theater Company. She and her husband reside in Hyde Park with their four children. 

Diane Jensen is also a graduate of USU with a degree in elementary education and piano performance. She has taught piano for more than forty-five years. She resides in Hyde Park with her husband.

Cinnamon Creek Singers -- folk music

   The Cinnamon Creek Folk Singers are a group of twelve women from Northern Utah who for twenty-two years have arranged, performed, and shared their love for traditional Western Pioneer, Railroad, and American folk songs. The group was created to preserve and promote the national and regional folk music heritage. Traditional instruments used during their programs include the mountain and hammered dulcimers, fiddle, bodhran drum, guitar, concertina, tin whistle, banjo, folk bass, harmonica, and washboard. Best known for their vocal harmony, the Cinnamon Creek Folk Singers use authentic and original arrangements, including “shape note” songs, to celebrate the folk writing and performance process. Stories and journal entries are used during the program to bring to life Western Pioneer history from a woman’s perspective. Railroad songs, religious hymns, western migration songs, and traditional folk music are performed by women who wear traditional costumes representative of the American West in the late 1800’s. The singers include director Ronda Shaffer, Janet Hunt, Diane Erickson, Annette Barber, Angela Daugherty, Diane Dunn, Kaye Jacobsen, Tere Moore, Janice Toyn, Eleanor Wellings, Merrilee Wells, and Becky Whittier.

Marge & Irv - voice/piano duo

   Margie and Irv is a musical duo featuring the stunning vocals of Margie Johnson, with Irv Nelson at the piano. Their repertoire includes classics, standards, and favorites from the past 100 years… songs you’ve heard and loved all your life. Margie recently moved to Utah from the D.C. area, where for more than two decades she performed as the lead vocalist in three different “big bands” at venues ranging from the Ritz Carlton to the Kennedy Center.
