The Westminster Bell Choir and the Belles of Westminster, under the direction of Cathy Ferrand Bullock, will perform at the Logan Tabernacle at 7:00 pm on Friday, May 9.  Admission is free.  The concert will feature secular and sacred music for full bell choir, including favorites such as “Jesus Loves Me” and “For the Beauty of the Earth”; a handbell quartet; and organ/piano/bell pieces highlighting the talents of special guests Brandon Clayton and Elisabeth Evans.

The bell choirs are interfaith groups sponsored by Logan’s First Presbyterian Church. The 20 ringers range from high school to retirement age, represent a number of local churches and wards, originally hail from all over the country, and have anywhere from a few months to a few decades of ringing experience.  

Thanks to the generous support of many in the community, the choirs have added a fifth octave of English handbells and a fifth octave of chimes since their appearance in the Tabernacle in December. The full range of bells and chimes will be used. 

The bell choirs rehearse August through May during which time they typically give several performances at churches, retirement apartment complexes, nursing homes, and other venues. They have participated in the American Festival Chorus’ Christmas concerts for several years. One of their most enjoyable activities has been their annual trip to the Utah State campus to flash mob various classes at the end of the Fall semester.

Easter Cantata, “Love’s Greatest Gift”

An Easter Cantata, “Love’s Greatest Gift”, will be performed Saturday and Sunday, April 19 & 20, at 7:00 pm, at the Logan Tabernacle in a Celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Admission is free.

"Love's Greatest Gift" was co-written by Cecelia Benson, Karen Carter, and John Carter of Logan, Utah and based on a text by the late Hortense Richardson of Salt Lake City. The cantata will be conducted by John Carter with full orchestra and choir.

The text of this cantata begins where most other works leave off, at the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and follows through to His ascension into Heaven.  The role of Mary will be sung by Heather Shepherd, a soprano residing in Atlanta Georgia, and the role of Christ will be sung by Christopher J. Carter, from Logan, Utah. Many other local soloists will be featured in the performance.

This year's performance will mark the 15th year that the work has been performed since 1996.

The Golden West Winds is a woodwind quintet of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base, California. This ensemble of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bass clarinet supports a wide variety of musical events ranging from military ceremonies and patriotic shows to educational programs and recitals of original works for woodwind quintet. The Golden West Winds plays music of all styles including marches, jazz and classical music.  Their “Americana” show is suitable for any audience while the educational show is specialized young students. 

The members of the Golden West Winds are all professional Air Force musicians working in support of Air Force and Air Mobility Command official military recruiting and community relations objectives

Handel’s Messiah will be presented by a choir composed of members from nine local prestigious  choirs at the Logan Tabernacle in a celebration of Easter, conducted by John Ribera and accompanied by a 25 piece orchestra of selected instrumentalists from the area.  The choir members are from the  American Festival Chorus, Bel Canto, Christmas Benefit Concert Choir, Imperial Glee Club, LDS Choirs, Men’s A Cappella of Cache Valley, First Presbyterian Chancellery Choir, St. John’s Episcopal Church Choir and the Towne Singers.

Conductor John Ribera has been conducting choirs since the late 1970's in various states and in Germany.  His love of music started at a young age singing and playing the violin in high school and college.   Ribera’s family moved here in 2000; John is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University, and an audiologist.

The soloists for this concert are soprano Lynnette Owens, altos Gayla M.Johnson and Loralee Choate, tenor Ivon Cullumber, and basses Harry Heap, Ben Burt and Jonathan Choate.  Familiar choruses include Hallelujah, For Unto Us a Child is Born, And the Glory. Solos will include I Know That My Redeemer Liveth, and The Trumpet Shall Sound.

George F. Handel composed this well-known oratorio in 23 days during the darkest moments of his life. This choral masterpiece was first performed in Dublin, Ireland in 1742 and has been played somewhere in the world every year since. Handel never performed Messiah at Christmas time, but rather near Easter. He donated all proceeds of his concerts to the poor and needy. It is a fitting Eastertide message. The libretto (words/lyrics) come directly from Old and New Testaments.

This will be the tenth performance of the Messiah at the Logan Tabernacle since 2000.  Thanks to our community for past support of Messiah concerts and for donating food and hygiene items to support the Food Pantry.
